I-485 Processing Time: How to Check Your Real Wait

Why we don't print a single number

I-485 processing times vary by field office, by category (family, employment, asylum-based and others), and they change month to month. Any fixed number you read on a blog can be out of date. The reliable source is the USCIS Check Case Processing Times tool: choose Form I-485, your category, and the field office handling your case.

How to check your case

  1. Find the receipt number on your I-797C receipt notice.
  2. Look up your form, category and office in the USCIS Check Case Processing Times tool.
  3. Check your status with USCIS Case Status Online or in your USCIS online account, which USCIS says can show personalized case completion estimates for online accounts.
  4. If your case is outside the posted time, USCIS lets you submit an e-Request for a case outside normal processing times.

What tends to slow cases down

Respond to RFEs fully and on time, and keep your address updated.

Current I-485 fee

Fees below come from the USCIS Fee Schedule (Form G-1055), edition dated 10/26/26, as read on October 31, 2026. Fees change; check USCIS for current fees before you file. Filing with the wrong fee can get your form rejected.

Form I-485 categoryFee
General filing (applicant 14 or older), online$1,390
General filing (applicant 14 or older), paper$1,440
Under 14 filing with a parent's I-485, online$900

When to talk to a lawyer

If your case is far beyond posted times, you got an RFE or notice of intent to deny, or you have any immigration violations or criminal history, an immigration attorney can review options.
